1. Turtle Power – Partners in Kryme
Partners In Kryme originally released Turtle Power for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles soundtrack, and although the film version of the song was never officially released in the ’90s, it still holds a special place in some people’s hearts today. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles may not be what you thought they were when you read the title, but they’re still Turtles - and some of the coolest Turtles ever.
2. Yertle the Turtle – Red Hot Chili Peppers
Yertle The Turtle is an interesting entry in the history of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The song itself is an adaptation of the Dr. Seuss book of the same name, and is the final track on the band’s second studio album, Freaky Styley. It features the poet’s trademark anapestic tetrameter, but to the funky tune of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
3. Turtles Are Cool – Ouse
I’m going to be frank here, Turtles Are Cool doesn’t mention turtles once during the entire track, it only makes the list because of the quality of the song and the presence of the word “turtle” in the title. Some people may claim that Ouse is talking about how cool turtles are, but it’s obvious that he hasn’t looked at the lyrics in their entirety.
4. Happy Together – The Turtles
Is it cheating if the song isn’t about turtles, but is written by a band called The Turtles? Happy Together is widely regarded as their best song, and it’s certainly the most successful. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967, becoming one of the most popular songs of the decade and cementing their place in the music industry despite being their only major hit.
5. Turtle Blues – Janis Joplin
Here’s another great song that’s not about turtles at all. Janis Joplin uses turtles as a metaphor in this song, and that’s good enough for me. She talks about hiding in your shell, being well protected from life’s hardships, and essentially compares it to building a wall around your heart after being manhandled by a mean, mean, mean man.
6. Song About Turtles – Bonecage
Music has always been a place where activists have thrived, as it’s a great way to get your message across to the masses. However, music is rarely the place for heated discussions on ecology. For those who are already lost, ecology is the study of the relationship between living organisms and the environment.
7. Poor Turtle – The Presidents of the United States of America
Here’s another very metaphorical but clever song that uses the idea of turtles. Poor Turtle mostly refers to the band’s instruments, comparing them to turtles inside their shell cases, and sees them losing one of them - guitar or bass, we don’t know - on pawnshop shelves.
8. Under The Sea – Samuel E. Wright
Although turtles are not the main theme of the song, they are part of marine life and are mentioned in the song and in Disney’s original animated film, The Little Mermaid.
9. Sea Turtle – Pinkfong
I’m going to apologize in advance to parents, because this is the time when you really need to dive into children’s songs to find good turtle songs. If you weren’t a fan of Baby Shark, you probably won’t like this one. In fact, if the mention of Baby Shark makes you shudder, this is a song you should avoid at all costs.
10. Tiny Tim the Turtle – Dr. Jean Feldman
Jean Feldman offers a wide range of songs for children, some of which I remember singing and dancing when I was still at school. Tony Tim The Turtle is one of the best, and deserves both a place here and a place on your child’s Spotify playlist.
11. Baby Turtles Song – Press Play Picture House
Baby Turtles Song is a children’s song about baby turtles swimming in the ocean. It helps teach children about turtles, and is a solid nursery rhyme that will stay in you and your child’s head for days.
12. Murray Had a Turtle – The Wiggles
Many turtles seem to be named Tiny Tim, including the one Murray had on The Wiggles. This song features prominently on the band’s Pop Go The Wiggles! album and is sure to be on The Wiggles’ Spotify playlist. Murray’s turtle even tries to eat a bathtub.
13. There Was A Little Turtle – The Kiboomers
There Was A Little Turtle is a children’s song about a turtle who runs around and catches everything. In the end, she can’t catch the child, but that’s okay. Your kids will love listening to this song and might even run around playing it. Fortunately, this song isn’t as bad as some of the other famous children’s songs we know, but be careful not to listen to it so often that it melts your own brain.
14. I Like Turtles Remix – BlackTerrorClan
If you’re in my age bracket and you’ve used the Internet at some point during your teenage years, you’re familiar with the turtle child. With a single line, he became an overnight sensation, with his face zombified and terrifying. As you’d expect at the height of meme culture, his sound was remixed and turned into a song… or several songs.
15. Save The Turtles – The Beluga Boys
We end the list with another meme song because I honestly think this one was just as good, but it didn’t stir up any nostalgia in me. Save The Turtles is the only track released by The Beluga Boys, a boy band inspired by the VSCO Girl meme about how many girls are almost indistinguishable from each other once they’ve finished retouching their photos.
